(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

At this time of year we hear a lot, and perhaps talk a lot, about peace – Peace On Earth, peace and goodwill toward men, etc. But sometimes when we have what some would call peace it just feels boring. What’s the distinction?

When you are bored you are in a state of not being interested in anything. There is nothing driving you forward each day. And you’re not drawn toward things, either. You’re in a state of limbo. Ho hum.

Peace, on the other hand, is a state of quiet and calm, a state of feeling good about yourself and your place in the world. Peace gives you a great inner strength, perhaps an awareness that you are not alone. There is a sense of knowing that everything is as it should be. When you are at peace you have positive expectations.

To achieve peace you will want to slow down and remove sources of stress and pressure from your life. You will want to get your needs met and identify your values. You may feel bored for a while but your growing awareness about you and about life will lead to peace.

Coaching Point: Boredom is the gateway to peace.
