(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

Your past can serve you well. You have had many experiences getting to where you are. You have learned a lot. You know what works and what doesn’t. Your past can inform you of much which is useful.

However, most people are at the effect of their past. If you react to current situations based on your past experiences or you remain enrolled in the stories you have constructed about your past, then you are living at the effect of your past.

To let your past be of most benefit, talk with a trusted person who can help you disengage from your old stories so that you can access that which is useful. It s simple, but not easy.
