(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

Living in today means to live in the present. Conscious. Aware. Engaged.

When you live in today you remember the past and learn from it, and are mindful of the future and prepare for it. You have a plan and let it influence your actions. You are open to opportunities and notice new resources.

Living for today can sound like a good idea — i.e. “Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first!” but ultimately it s about medicating the things which aren t working for you. Just because you want to smoke because it gives you pleasure or you think it makes you look cool doesn t mean you can escape future heart or lung diseases. Just because you haven t cleaned up a past relationship doesn t mean it won t rear its head and bite you at some point.

This distinction is not a parental warning. It is a way to look at two very different life attitudes so you can make a choice.

Coaching Point: How can you live in today and still enjoy everything?
