(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

Stuff happens. Some of it is stuff we don’t like, wish hadn’t happened, and really don’t want to remember. But it’s there. It’s right there inside.

One way to deal with the past is to try burying it. The trouble is, even when we think we’re being successful at keeping it buried, it exacts a high hidden cost. Like trying to hold a beach ball under water, it’s tiring. Then, like that beach ball, the past pops up, sometimes when we least expect it. Burying gets more expensive over time.

Another way to deal with the past is to breathe into it. That means look at it, see it, stare into it, and keep breathing. Get some help with this. Nothing’s as scary together as it is alone. You pay the price of breathing into the past once, and then you’re done.

Coaching Point: Are you ready to try this on just one issue from your past?
