S:0712 Distinction: I Don’t Know How vs. I Can’t

(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

There is no shame in not knowing how to do something. That’s what learning and growth are about — discovering how. It can be exciting to discover there is something you want to learn.

I Can’t has a feeling of being boxed in, restricted, at-the- effect-of, no-way-out.

There will always be things you don’t know how to do. That’s life. But you don’t have to feel like a victim because of it.

Coaching Point: Do you live in the wonder and delight of uncertainty where learning how is a gift?
