(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

These two words are sometimes used interchangeably, but there is a difference, a distinction, between them and that difference shows up in their respective energies.

Impulsivity has a charge to it, a push, a reaction-style of action.

Spontaneity is possible when you have abundant reserves which give you the space to choose to act rather than react.

Impulsive actions are hard and can be the cause of problems. There may be a tightness of jaw and a holding of breath. There is no time to think. Inherently, impulsivity is the result of fear, or causes fear, or maybe even both!

Spontaneity, on the other hand, is an easy flow of right action. You feel an inner guidance or awareness which supports your moves. To an on-looker you may appear to be acting in a short time window, but to you, feeling the spontaneous motivation to move, time opens up and you feel no constriction. And you’re probably smiling!

Develop your reserves, have clarity of purpose, be open to opportunities, be aware of your surroundings, enjoy the easy pull of spontaneity.

Coaching Point: Do you remember a time when you were in-the-zone, acted spontaneously, and enjoyed the result?
