(Principles are basic truths that, when applied, cause success to come to you easier and quicker.)

Consider your heart. The right side receives old, used, dark blood from your veins and pumps it into your lungs. There it is revitalized into healthy, energy-filled, bright red blood which is pumped by the left side of your heart into your arteries to feed your body. It does this, of course, endlessly for your entire life.

But where does that fresh new blood go first when it leaves your heart? It goes into arteries which feed your heart! Your heart is designed to take care of itself first, then take care of the rest of you. While you know this if you ever had a basic course in biology, you may not have given it much thought.

The obvious metaphor here is that in order to love (share, give, encourage, etc.) anyone else it is important to first love (feed, support, etc.) yourself. Sometimes it can feel selfish to take care of yourself. It’s not. Self-love is essential for a whole and healthy, and giving, life.

By the way, notice what happens to the rest of the body when the heart has a blockage which inhibits its ability to feed itself first. Not good!

Coaching Point: Do you have specific ways in which you take care of – love – yourself?
