(Principles are basic truths that, when applied, cause success to come to you easier and quicker.)

Many years ago when I finally woke up and realized I had to run my own life, I happened on a mentor with many pieces of great advice. One was (and is) – In any communication, if you are the speaker, assume 100% of the responsibility for the communication being effective and, if you are the listener, also assume 100% of the responsibility for it being effective.

In other words, there is no “I’ll meet you in the middle.”

Instead, own the responsibility yourself. Because it’s really about you having the outcome you want.

If you’re the speaker and you want someone to be, do, or have something, make sure you are clear in your communications. Get the outcome you want.

If you’re the listener wanting information, directions, or training, listen until you learn what you want. This, too, is about getting the outcome you want.

“I didn’t know” is not an effective way to run a really good life.

Coaching Point: Do you assume 100% of the communication responsibility?
