At the gym the other day a young man I’ve grown to know and like popped out with an attention-getting phrase. When talking about mistakes he had made in his somewhat rough past and that he was making fewer now he said, “There’s a smart guy inside.”

When I asked what he meant he said he had done stupid stuff in the past and that’s what had caused most of his problems. He was now ‘hearing’ the smarter guy – which already lived inside him and always had, but ignored.

He’s still tempted to do stupid stuff and does occasionally. However, he now hears the ‘smart guy inside’ more clearly, follows his advice more often, and enjoys better outcomes.
