(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

It is quite difficult to discern essence from appearance, until it isn’t.

You can probably recall numerous examples from your past where you thought something was one way (its appearance) and then later, perhaps in a flash of insight, discovered the essence hiding within. That appearance-to-essence shift pretty much describes most of the childhood experience.

Even as adults it is so easy to get caught up in appearance, believing what you see/hear/think/feel is right and real. The opinions of others can also affect this. But most appearance is illusion.

Essence is what-is-so regardless of opinion. The wise experience essence. Essence guides, uplifts, strengthens, supports. Essence is almost always simple.

Some barriers to experiencing essence are neediness, fear, anger, guilt, victim-hood, in other words the unexamined human condition! Resolving and transcending your distracting human emotions reveals essence.
