S:1237 Distinction: A Value vs. A Need

(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

This is a particularly useful Distinction when looking into basic human motivations. We show up, perform, and achieve outcomes for different reasons and with a range of motivations.

One of the most important is the set of values we hold. Your core values motivate you to do things which are expressions/manifestations of them. Fundamentally you feel better when you live your values.

Being motivated by Needs is different. An unmet Need is uncomfortable, maybe even painful. Getting the Need met can temporarily stop the discomfort, but when we use the outside to meet our Needs relief is only temporary.

When you identify and completely resolve a Need (yes, today it is possible, and easily so) it frees you to live in the joyful experience of your values.

Your values draw you forward and leave you feeling fulfilled.

Your Needs are drivers away from pain and, at best, leave you feeling only relief.

Coaching Point: Have you identified a Need from which you would like to be free?
