(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

Consider a large ring, one presenting three stunning amethysts. It frequently draws positive comments about its beauty, style, and elegance. A significant piece of jewelry.

When looked at more closely – which most admirers do not do – you see, beyond the stones the mounting is an amazing piece of art in itself. Intricately and subtly carved with a story of its own. Arguably more art than the stones, pretty as they are.

So it can be in life. Sometimes the setting is more significant than the object of immediate attention. In a world that is fast-paced, information-rich, and soundbite-loving it is tempting to touch the tops of topics taking no time to tarry, to go deeper.

It’s true a major function of a setting is to present the object in the best possible way. It’s also true the setting can be an important part of the art.
