(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

Playgrounds are not inherently better than laboratories as the order of the words in this Distinction might imply. Each have their place in a well-lived life. It’s the confusion between them which wants review.

A hint is built into each word. Play and labor.

When you think of a playground what comes to mind? Fun, joy, exploration, discovery, smiles, perhaps even interaction with others?

And laboratories? Discipline, structure, problem solving, repetitiveness, fail and restart? Sure, but also how about fun, joy, exploration, discovery, smiles, perhaps even interaction with others?

The attitudes in playgrounds and in laboratories may be similar or different. It’s a personal choice.

Life is not a problem to be solved through gritted teeth. It’s to be lived, experienced, reveled in and yes played with!

Laboratories have their place. Along with their tools of structure and discipline. Just don’t let life become all labor and little play.
