(Principles are basic truths that, when applied, cause success to come to you easier and quicker.)
“Old Socks, New Shoes” is part of the title of a music album by The Jazz Crusaders. Strangely, I think the phrase holds a Coaching thought.
Sometimes in life it’s time for something new. We want it, or need it, and by golly we’re going to have it. It’s not about logic or even is it necessarily good thinking. It’s just time!
If giving in to this impulse won’t break the bank (or a relationship or something else of value), we may go ahead and do it. And then find it not as satisfying as hoped.
The reason is it may be only part of what is missing, only part of what caused the drive, the impulse. We may also need to change some other, perhaps underlying, parts.
Shiny new shoes on holey old socks may not get us what we were looking for.
Coaching Point: To get ready for something new got any ‘old socks’ you need to replace first?
