(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)
A state of compassion radiates a lovely energy. It’s attractive, inclusive, engaging, and uplifting. Fine attributes for anyone to experience, whether ‘sending’ or ‘receiving’ compassion.
So what’s the issue this Distinction is addressing? It’s about attachment to an outcome.
To care too much about someone, some organization, or some project is a setup for being drained. Just as any Strength overdone can become a hindrance, so it is with an overdone level of compassion. You can become consumed by your compassion.
Care, but have healthy limits. Engage, but don’t carry them. Want for them, but don’t need for them.
And be compassionate with yourself!
Coaching Point: Or is this only a reminder because you already have learned it; that you’re already being compassionate without sliding into being consumed?
