(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

You probably have been instructed, both overtly and covertly, to strive for perfection all your life. “Practice makes perfect.” “She’s a 10!” “Why can’t you be perfect like …..?” Even knowing perfection is unattainable you may still have it as your life model.

Here are some thoughts on Excellence versus Perfection:

Perfection is having to be right, excellence is willing to be wrong. Perfection is fear, excellence is enjoying taking risks. Perfection is anger and frustration, excellence is powerful. Perfection leads to having to control, excellence allows spontaneous response.

Perfection is judging, excellence is accepting. Perfection is taking, excellence is giving. Perfection is doubt, excellence is confidence. Perfection is pressure, excellence is natural. Perfection is being attached to the outcome, excellence is joy in the journey. Perfection is unattainable, excellence is achievable every day.
