(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

It is a fine line that separates these, but a chasm in the difference.

When you envy someone there is a feeling of lack on your part; you want what they have. This can lead to resentment, even malice.

To admire is to enjoy someone’s attributes or situation. This may manifest as pleasure or even wonder.

Which did you feel – admiration or envy – the last time a coworker landed a big sale or got a promotion or got praised? The interesting thing about this is that it is not about them at all. It is about you. What is lacking in your life that keeps you from being able to admire others successes or fine attributes, without feeling envy? Your answer will lead you to the next thing you can strengthen in yourself.

The result will be freedom.
