(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

When talking about having freedom, most people describe what they want freedom from — financial worry, unsatisfying work, a broken relationship, or some other unpleasant situation. Freedom-from is, at its core, a driving energy. And it works. By focusing on getting away from something you can be powerfully motivated into action.

Freedom-to is a different matter. Its essence is choice. When you have filled your unmet needs, created abundant reserves and have clarity about what brings you satisfaction and joy, you are able to focus your energy on freedom-to issues. You are free to create, develop and express.

You might decide that living in freedom-to is preferable to freedom-from. It may be. Just don’t confuse them. They are fundamentally different sources of energy.
