(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value or attitude.)

There is a difference between working under pressure and working under stress.

For me, working under pressure can create reward. A tight deadline or short notice can create a lot of pressure, but having a clear vision of what’s to be accomplished and the appropriate tools at hand, keep it from becoming stressful.

Stress is caused by not having that vision, not being sure of the path I’m taking, not clear what it is that the market/client/boss has as their vision.

So it’s simple, right? Be clear on what you’re wanting to accomplish. Have the proper resources available. Prepare.

Or just wing it like crazy! Playing with what comes up, creating on the spot, trusting your intuition and inner guidance, making a mess, making your art. Whoopee!

Planning and preparing or winging it — either are preferable to letting yourself be stressed.

Coaching Point: Some people do their best work under pressure. Are you one of them?
