As a young teenager I had a paper route. It was for an evening newspaper (dinosaur-dead now) delivered six afternoons per week, but in the morning on Sundays. I came to enjoy the quiet solitude of the pre-dawn day and learned to recognize many of the sky constellations, particularly Orion.
I was surprised to discover that at least one of the ‘stars’ defining Orion’s ‘shape’ wasn’t a star at all. It was a whole galaxy!
And about that ‘shape.’ I later learned that the defining lights were not all in a plane, equally distant from Earth, so that if you were somehow able to travel out to the side of the line between Orion and Earth you would see the widely varying distances each had. Thus, from the side, there would be no Orion.
Orion is only due to our unique Earth-based perspective.
Perspective is a major defining skill in determining how we ‘see’ and experience life. Yet few people bother to shift their perspective to view things differently. They miss many opportunities to expand their awareness, see new paths, acquire helpful resources, and … win.
Coaching Point: This Principle is close to my heart because as a Coach no small part of my role is to assist people to see things from different perspectives. Do you have the skill to stop, shift, and observe from a new perspective?
