We have a conditioned response to avoid pain, or at least minimize it. This can cause us to mask it, Cover It Over with something more pleasant. The problem with the ‘cover up’ job is that the issue is still there, lurking, waiting for an opportunity to pop back up into our current experience. Ugh.

By the way, we all do this to some extent. This Distinction does not presuppose that any of us will become perfectly clear of all of our unuseful conditioning. But people who are leading happy successful lives have learned to recognize when they are masking or suppressing emotional ‘stuff’ and they take action to handle it, to get over it.

Resentful about something from the past? Guilty? Angry? Hurt? Feeling powerless or victim-y? How about fearful? All these (and countless more) emotional reactions are only that – reactions. They are inside you. Triggered by the outside.

It’s hard to change the outside world, but today it’s not hard to change your response to it. You can Get Over It.
