(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value, or attitude.)

Imagine you are in your workshop, or your kitchen, or your office. Now imagine you have finished using a tool, appliance, or utensil. At that point, many people would put down what they had finished using. That may not be the best thing to do.

Instead of putting it down, it may be better to put it up. Two reasons.

First, you put a tool up so you will know where to find it the next time you need it! Leaving a tool where it was last used ensures that a hunt for it will precede its next use.

The bigger reason is that if you’ve assigned a place for the item, you’ve thought through its use. Safety, space, usage frequency, accessibility, and other efficiency and environmental factors. Setting things up well pays long-term dividends.

So the next time you finish using something, put it up; don’t put it down.
