(Principles are basic truths that, when applied, cause success to come to you more easily and more quickly.)
Usually, someone presents these as a Distinction – territory being better than a mere map. The argument is that a map is good to have, but it’s never as rich as the territory. Also, the territory is always fresher (newer) than the map. Those are reasonable and true.
But this S3MC is not a Distinction (a Versus). This is a Principle (with an And).
Only a tiny percentage of the time are you stepping into a territory that has no map. Or at least a map you don’t have access to. Or, more likely, haven’t looked for.
A useful part of that is that unmapped territory sparks creativity. WaaHoo! Let’s go!
The rest of the time, most of the time, there is a map for the territory. Someone has already made the journey. As the old saying goes – success leaves clues. Failure leaves clues, too. The map contains those clues.
Always look for a map. Traversing territory that is new to you without a map makes the journey harder.
If a map is not available, don’t let that stop you. But do realize it will be a different experience than if you had a map.
Most highly successful people blend the two skills in a harmonious manner. They use maps much of the time. Trailblaze the rest.
