(Distinctions are subtleties of language that, when gotten, cause a shift in a belief, behavior, value, or attitude.)
Principles differ. Some are valued more highly by some people than others. Part of the differences which make us richer.
Principles are foundational truths that guide behavior. They provide context within which content can have meaning.
Principles are personal. You feel the ones that are yours deeply. Generally without conscious thought. They are a big part of ‘who you are.’ They guide your expanding behavior. They are uplifting.
Rules restrict. And are necessary – everyone in a country agrees to a rule of which side of the road they drive on!
Rules can be used to get us to do things we otherwise would not do. The more rules, the less freedom. A healthy balance between rules and freedom is a mark of successful structures – from family to organization to community to nation-state.
To use this Distinction most effectively study and become clear about your principles. Did you choose them or inherit them? Have you changed them or added to them lately?
The clearer you are about your principles the easier it will be to live within the rules you must. Or to redefine those rules.
Principles tend to be long-lasting. Rules come and go.
